How To Unlock A Steering Wheel

man driving with hands on the steering wheel

Is your steering wheel locked into place? Since most Cave Creek and Paradise Valley drivers don’t know how to lock a steering wheel in the first place, we understand if you’re feeling frustrated. Don’t let the stress get to you.

Here’s how to unlock a steering wheel:

  1. Insert the key into the ignition and see if it will turn. If the engine turns over, your steering wheel should unlock automatically.
  2. If the key does not turn, apply gentle pressure and see if you can get it to move. Be careful: Turning the key too hard can cause it to break off in the ignition.
  3. Still no luck? Your steering wheel should allow a small amount of movement in one direction. Find out which way it can turn, then apply gentle pressure in that direction at the same time as you try to turn the key.

How to Unlock a Steering Wheel: Tips and Tricks

Before you try this process with your own car, there are a few things that you should keep in mind:

  • Avoid Excessive Force – If you break off your key in the ignition, you’ll need to call a mechanic. Remember, trying to force a steering wheel to unlock will probably just damage your steering mechanism.
  • Don’t Shake the Wheel – When your steering wheel is locked, it will only be able to move in one direction, and even then, it will only be able to move a small distance. Shaking or rocking the steering wheel will only cause problems, so figure out which way it can move, and then work gently.
  • The Problem Might Not Be Your Wheel – If your key is on the older side, try pulling it out slightly before you try to turn it. If you’ve been having regular trouble with your ignition, it might help to clean it out with a bottle of canned air before you try to insert the key. When all else fails, you may need to secure a new key or a new ignition switch.

How Did I Lock My Steering Wheel in the First Place?

If you’ve ended up in this position before, you should know how to lock a steering wheel so you can make sure it doesn’t happen again. A steering wheel will lock if it is turned sharply in one direction after the car has been turned off.  If you’re worried about thieves, locking your steering wheel can help you enjoy peace of mind. After all, even someone who breaks in will be unable to drive away, since they can’t unlock a steering wheel without the key. To lock your steering wheel, simply turn off the engine, remove the key from the ignition, and turn the wheel in one direction until you hear a click. It’s that simple!
