What is Volkswagen 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive?

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

If you’re considering a new Volkswagen model, you may have heard about the Volkswagen 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive system. So, what is 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive? This is the VW brand’s take on your standard all-wheel drive system that includes advanced technology for an improved performance and handling on Paradise Valley roads and beyond! Learn more about VW 4MOTION®, the AWD Volkswagen models we have, and more VW information today at Volkswagen North Scottsdale!

AWD vs. 4WD: How Do They Compare?

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems both work to increase traction. Though they essentially serve the same purpose, they’re not the same drivetrain. When it comes to differences, here’s what you’ll find:

  • Turn On/Turn Off: AWD doesn’t need to be turned on; it automatically adjusts the amount of engine power sent to the wheels. 4WD can be turned on/off as needed. When 4WD is turned off, the vehicle uses RWD or FWD in its place.
  • Vehicle Types: All-wheel drive is typically seen on cars and crossover SUVs, while four-wheel drive is more common for trucks and off-roading vehicles.
  • Cost & Weight: All-wheel drive systems are usually lighter and less expensive than four-wheel drive systems, which is why they’re popular for everyday vehicles like sedans and crossovers.

While there aren’t any Volkswagen vehicles that offer 4WD, there are models with VW 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive. These Volkswagen AWD models do offer aspects of both 4WD and AWD as it’s technically an all-wheel drive system.

How Does 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive Work?

VW 4MOTION® AWD is an improved version of your average all-wheel drive system. This system uses sensors to see which tires need torque the most and will adjust engine output based on driving conditions. While all tires are engaged, the system will distribute about 90% of power to the front axle and about 10% to the rear axle

If the 4MOTION® sensors sense that a tire is starting to lose traction, weight is immediately redistributed as necessary. This means the torque will be distributed to give you the perfect balance, keeping you and your Volkswagen in control in Cave Creek. If the road conditions are smooth, 4MOTION® can switch to FWD or RWD to help conserve fuel by reducing the amount of power sent to the wheels.
