All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems both work to increase traction. Though they essentially serve the same purpose, they’re not the same drivetrain. When it comes to differences, here’s what you’ll find:
While there aren’t any Volkswagen vehicles that offer 4WD, there are models with VW 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive. These Volkswagen AWD models do offer aspects of both 4WD and AWD as it’s technically an all-wheel drive system.
VW 4MOTION® AWD is an improved version of your average all-wheel drive system. This system uses sensors to see which tires need torque the most and will adjust engine output based on driving conditions. While all tires are engaged, the system will distribute about 90% of power to the front axle and about 10% to the rear axle.
If the 4MOTION® sensors sense that a tire is starting to lose traction, weight is immediately redistributed as necessary. This means the torque will be distributed to give you the perfect balance, keeping you and your Volkswagen in control in Cave Creek. If the road conditions are smooth, 4MOTION® can switch to FWD or RWD to help conserve fuel by reducing the amount of power sent to the wheels.
